FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government announced it will establish a centralized Information Access and Privacy Services unit aimed at improving the process for people seeking information from public bodies and strengthening the protection of personal information.
“Your government is committed to fostering a culture of openness and transparency while protecting the privacy of the individual,” said Treasury Board President Roger Melanson. “This modernized access to information and privacy system will provide quality services and programs to New Brunswickers.”
The government introduced amendments to the Right to Information and Protection of Privacy Act in March of 2017 as a result of a review concerning how personal information is managed and how government information is assessed. Those changes allowed for the sharing of information among public bodies in a secure manner, improving the process for people seeking information from public bodies, and strengthening the protection of private information.
The new unit will be centralized within the Treasury Board. Its mandate will be to provide overall leadership, strategic direction, policy and operational advice and support services to the government and other public bodies to help comply with the act.
